Summary This project seeks to develop a game-theoretic framework to quantify how the presence of a carrier strike group can deter aggressive military actions from opposing forces in an objective manner. We propose to approach this problem in three steps. First, we develop a conceptual model to quantify the strength and relation among nations in the operational theater, in terms of diplomatic, informational, military, and economic powers. Second, we develop a wargame to study actions and outcomes. The wargame will be designed and participated by students, faculty members, and the topic sponsor. Finally, we use the results from the wargame to infer the deterrence value of a carrier strike group, namely, how its presence influences the probability that a conflict will occur.
