Summary |
The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has been host to the biennial International Mine Warfare Technology Symposium since April 1995. Attendee makeup is Department of Defense operating forces, industry, academia, the international community, as well as from senior Department of Defense, Navy, and Marine Corps offices. The purpose of this unclassified symposium, with foreign participation, addresses a broad range of topics including the current status and future requirements of mine warfare technology. Breakout sessions showcase basic scientific and emerging technologies and research applicable to undersea environments. Specialized sessions are focused on Littoral Combat Ship-centric mine warfare, advanced undersea warfare systems, mine warfare applications in Maritime Homeland Defense, gliders, environmental research and developments operational data flow and communications, and other related areas. Many topics will exploit unmanned systems to aid in meeting particular technical requirements. The Consortium for Robotics and Unmanned Systems Education and Research (CRUSER), chartered by the Undersecretary of the Navy, collaboratively hosts this symposium and therefore topics are more directly related to unmanned systems, such as propulsion, autonomy, experimentation, guidance and control, and energy. This will be the 13th symposium. Past symposia have covered Mine Technology, Naval Mine Warfare, Land Mine Warfare, Humanitarian and Peacekeeping Demining (including unexploded ordnance), Emerging Technology and Unmanned Systems. The International Mine Warfare Technology Symposium Series are nationally and internationally acclaimed and have been recognized by the policy and executive levels in the Department of Defense and in the Military Departments. This biennial gathering is the only venue for broad dissemination of mine warfare issues, emerging technologies. It provides a venue for discussion and exchange that may lead to mine warfare problem solving, and it enables dialog between the United States Department of Defense and foreign allied nations. |
