Summary |
The overarching goal of this research is to provide recommendations on how an AR system could be constructed to reduce the risk of aircraft collisions during towing evolutions. Therefore, the proposed research will address the following research question: To what effect can aircraft towing evolutions supplemented by augmented reality systems decrease the chances of collisions with other aircraft and static objects? The research plan entails the following: (1) Analyze aircraft mishap reports from the Naval Safety Center and search for a common damage area on the majority of Class C, towing-related aircraft mishaps. (2) Based off the results from this analysis, we will evaluate potential use of AR for improving safety of aircraft towing operations. The intent of this evaluation is to determine whether a device that enhances the visibility of the aircraft will facilitate a greater degree of control throughout the duration of the towing evolution. (3) Convene a focus group of SMEs to assess the feasibility and usability of such an AR system. |
