Summary | The intent of this research is to study the feasibility of employing a HEFL DE weapon system onboard USMC rotorcraft, specifically the UH-Y "Huey" and AH-1Z "Cobra" Helicopters. It will explore descriptions of high-energy fiber lasers and the characteristics required to make them capable of being utilized as DE weapons. We will also analyze the various methods of employment for such weapons. We will also study the potential negative effects that can be posed to orbiting spacecraft by inadvertent lasings from airborne high-energy laser systems. The study will include notional vulnerability data for different satellite sub-systems and predictive avoidance techniques. The total amount requested for FY 13 is $100k. |
