Summary This research aims to explore or develop a path forward for using hydrogen to power UAS systems on surface ships. Surface ships are a very restrictive environment where it is difficult to get approval to use hazardous materials such as explosive hydrogen gas, but hydrogen could potentially be a very useful fuel for autonomous unmanned systems in maritime environments. This research will explore the existing regulations that impact the use of hydrogen on ships and will work to develop a credible reference that can be used to document the conditions under which hydrogen can be used on ships. Additionally, this effort will compare naval guidelines for handling hydrogen against industry best practices to determine if existing naval regulations are unnecessarily restrictive. The final objective of this research is to validate and publish our findings so that future naval operators can cite our work when seeking approval for their shipboard hydrogen applications.
