Summary Before naval forces can fully leverage autonomous vehicles in support of the wide-area, long-duration missions characteristic of undersea warfare, it is necessary to break the tether between the robot and its support by manned platforms. This proposal is the second year of a two-year research program that aims to develop and deploy various components of the robotic outpost concept. The program will allow CAVR researchers to investigate relevant challenges including autonomy, navigation, perception, and environmental impact. It will focus on three specific areas: Adaptive control of under-actuated vehicles, Intervention and blending of active, directional and passive sensing for docking, navigation and intervention. The research will emphasize development for realistic operations through the deployment of an outpost in both a pool and benign ocean environment.
