Summary	7SEAS (Oceanographic expedition). Scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory in Monterey (led by Dr. Jeffrey Reid) conducted a pilot-experiment in September, 2011, to obtain information on transport of black carbon generated by fires in Indonesia up the South China Sea. They deployed a chartered ship from the Philippines, instrumented with meteorological and aerosol sensors. A CIRPAS Scientist was responsible for operating and maintaining the aerosol probes. It became clear during the experiment that a cloud-condensation nuclei - precipitation feedback mechanism that reigned in one of two weather regimes endured, acted as a powerful sink, or filter, on the anthropogenic aerosol and dominated the transport distance of the smoke. Lack of cloud related measurements, however, prevented any quantitative conclusions to be drawn. The NRL group has requested that CIRPAS also support their second expedition, and in addition to measuring aerosol quantities, bring instrumentation to measure cloud properties as well. It is proposed here that two people from CIRPAS provide this support and add a cloud radar, cloud droplet size spectrometer, and a cloud condensation nuclei spectrometer to the measurement capability.
