Summary | The department of Oceanography owns two Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) SPRAY gliders and one Teledyne/Webb Research glider, and these vehicles have been involved in NSF and ONR funded projects here in the Monterey Bay. However, lacking internal NPS expertise with these vehicles we have leaned heavily on SIO and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institution (MBARI) for engineering and data management support as well as deployment and recovery capability. Over the last year that we have worked with SIO and MBARI our knowledge of these vehicles has greatly increased and we now have three staff members, Marla Stone, Chris Miller, and Tarun Chandrayadula who are capable technicians. We are requesting that CRUSER help fund the continuing work of these technicians so that our fleet of vehicles can be used more effectively in NPS academic programs and student theses (such as Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, and USW) as well as externally funded research. |
