Back MUOS Applications in Support of the Tactical Warfighter

Fiscal Year 2014
Division Research & Sponsored Programs
Department Naval Research Program
Investigator(s) Scott, Alan D.
Sponsor NPS Naval Research Program (Navy)
Summary The following issues will be addressed:
A. Identify one or more specific mission(s) and associated platforms that can leverage MUOS IP-based communications capabilities and determine specific applications required to support the mission(s) and platforms.
B. Define the requirements, architecture and CONOPS for the identified applications and other user equipment hardware/software needed to support the selected mission(s)/platforms. Interface as required with appropriate user communities, platform program management offices and MUOS program stakeholders.
C. Determine the feasibility of modeling the identified applications and associated MUOS network communications using an appropriate network modeling tool. This activity will require interfacing with appropriate warfare community and MUOS program representatives along with network modeling experts at NPS as well as within DOD and industry.
D. If determined to be feasible, develop a plan for modeling and simulation of the identified application(s) and associated MUOS network operations including identification of required hardware/software and network modeling tools and external support required. This activity will also require interfacing with appropriate warfare community and MUOS program representatives along with
network modeling experts at NPS as well as within DOD and industry.
Options for continuation of the effort under this or subsequent proposals include:
A. Plan the development and integration of the required application(s) on simulated or actual host platforms and develop a strategy for testing of the application(s) in a tactical networking experiment. This task will include investigation of potential involvement by other NPS academic departments and research centers such as the Computer Science Department and the Center for Network Innovation and Experimentation as well as external organizations such as the MUOS lab facilities.
B. Develop and integrate prototype applications and test in tactical networking experiments or operational exercises. This effort will likely be conducted in conjunction with the MUOS labs and/or NPS Tactical Networking Topology (TNT) Field Experiments.
C. Capture lessons learned for the development, integration and test of future MUOS-based applications and update the process established under this proposal as necessary.
D. Continue the effort by applying the updated process to develop, integrate and test applications for additional missions and platforms that can leverage MUOS IP-based communications capabilities.
