Summary COTS handheld devices have multiple radios (such as Bluetooth, WiFi Direct, WiFi, Cellular 2/3/4/5G) built into them. Using all of these radios simultaneously can provide great flexibility in communications in limited yet complex conditions such as the ones faced in many tactical environments. This research seeks to develop a demonstrator on COTS handhelds for controlling how data is shared across the various waveforms and standards, routing information where it needs to go regardless of the connection path in a fully automated fashion. This study will extend our research in secure wireless multi-hop communication in infrastructure-less networking to work across different radios.

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a secure, reliable and efficient way of multi-hop communication using the variety of radios that are embedded in COTS mobile devices. This solution should not require detailed technical knowledge of the device itself or network configuration and operation.

This study will focus on the following research question: How might the Android OS be extended to support multi-radio, multi-hop communication in a tactical environment populated by a variety of handheld devices?

Deliverables include quarterly IPRs, field demonstrations of the system demonstrator a final report and thesis.
