Summary Data communications between deployed Navy ships and shore stations are constrained by channels that are expensive, limited and potentially at risk. Capacity is precious. Well-structured schema-validated data can be confirmed correct prior to transmission with significantly better compression ratios. Data operations must be coherent, planned, continuously monitored, evaluated and improved to achieve necessary capabilities for remote communications with fleet assets. Improvements in compression, capacity and throughput are possible by applying open standards and demonstrable by building an open source test suite.
Primary goal of this work is to demonstrate best-of-breed EXI techniques and dedicated testing results to inform Navy designs and decisions for afloat data compression.
Of note is that all this work builds on, and contributes to, operational concept development of Network Optional Warfare (NOW). https://wiki.nps.edu/display/NOW/Network+Optional+Warfare
