Summary The Naval Postgraduate School, Department of Physics has been supporting JIDO and DIA effort of applied research for the detection and suppression of processes associated with planning, logistics, manufacturing and emplacement of improvised explosive devices.
This proposal is to continue the research effort by:
Acquiring new spectral signatures of objects related to insurgent activities, allowing sensors by apply those spectra to find such objects in the war zones.
Improving of the fidelity of data collected, particularly in the long wavelength infrared, through development of better algorithms to perform temperature/emissivity separation required to increase the accuracy the LWIR data. This will result in data more useful to airborne sensors.
Verifying hundreds of spectra previously acquired, so it can be included in a database library that is accessible by all US government agencies.
Research and development of new methods to sense insurgent activity using the whole electromagnetic spectrum. This effort will include considering more novel uses of the currently collected regions and an expansion of collection capability to lower frequencies. This effort will include laboratory measurements, field measurements, and analysis of spectra from explosive materials and precursors.
