Summary The purpose of this research is to investigate what spacecraft design changes and tactics will provide the most protection to space assets while maximizing the preservation of capability.
The Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) has started researching ways to defend spacecraft against attack. Currently, AFSPC does not have tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) for spacecraft maneuvering in response to a threat. They have created the Orbital Engagement Maneuver (OEM) Integrated Validation Team (IVT) to produce a standardized AFSPC framework. This framework will be a set of spacecraft maneuver techniques to gain advantage relative to another spacecraft. NPS will work with the OEM IVT to aid in the development of these tactics.
This study will provide satellite operators with insight on how to defend their space assets against attack and inform decision makers on what spacecraft capabilities require improvement. Ultimately, this study aims to help advise spacecraft manufacturers as to what design modifications best ensure spacecraft survivability.
