Summary | The Naval Postgraduate School will investigate acoustic propagation in the changing Arctic environment in conjunction with the Arctic Submarine Laboratory’s ICEX-2016. This objective will be pursued in the following manner: During a 5-6 day period, acoustic signals will be transmitted from (a) a mid-frequency source suspended at multiple depths under the ice and from (b) multiple mobile sources (EMATTs) traversing circular paths centered on two vertical line receiving arrays (VLAs) deployed in a right-angle configuration 5-6 km from the ice camp. Environmental information will be collected via CTD measurements taken multiple times per day at the source location, as well as via environmental sensors deployed on the VLAs. Additional environmental data will be shared by other researchers during the experiment. The signals and ambient noise will be analyzed to investigate the depth, range, angular and specular characteristics of the acoustic propagation, which are expected to correlate to differences in water mass structure and under-ice conditions. |
