Summary |
The Naval Postgraduate School has developed several open source tools to assist the Defense and Intelligence communities in the analysis of information present on digital media. These tools include the bulk_extractor digital forensics tool and the hashdb high performance database for managing billions of cryptographic hash values on a single forward-deployable system. We propose ways for improving these tools. This proposal also provides for the continued development of the Real Data Corpus, which is a primary source of data being used for the development and validation of these tools. Specific work under this proposal includes: 1) Continued development of the bulk_extractor media analysis tool, with attention to incorporating new decompression algorithms and reducing false positives; 2) Continued work in the field of approximate matching, with a research component that will evaluate uses for approximate matching and an engineering component that will evaluate techniques for improved performance such as GPU acceleration; 3) Continued expansion and maintenance of the Real Data Corpus, which is used for scientific algorithm development at NPS, and for tool testing at DIA: 4) Direct support to the Sponsor. |
