Summary |
The Medium Displacement Unmanned Surface Vehicle (MDUSV), initially known as Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program, was originally focused on demonstrating its capability to conduct ASW missions. However, the core platform and autonomy technologies are broadly extendable to underpin a wide range of missions and configurations for MDUSV and future unmanned naval vessels. Our research team conducted a study in FY17 that examined the MDUSV as part of an adaptive force package (AFP) as it conducted an anti-surface warfare (ASuW) mission while operating within distributed maritime operations (DMO) environment. Our team specifically explored these next steps in MDUSV’s development through the application of systems engineering, systems architecting, and systems simulation analysis to a scenario based on a CONOPS developed and explored by other student teams at NPS as part of their Wargaming course. Our intent is to expand this effort by again examining the MDUSV in a relevant naval mission, with focus on one or more of several aspects of the vessel and its role in a scenario within DMO, to include Battle Group Organization, command and control (C2), levels of autonomy of the platform, and addition of various weapon systems to the platform. Additionally, we intend to address the MDUSV and how it could best provide its capabilities to a Carrier/Expeditionary Strike Group (CSG), also within the DMO environment. Our preference would be to bring a second student to conduct this aspect of the overall project. This research addresses topics submitted by two sponsors: NPS-19-N106: Robust Modeling & Simulation to Support MDUSV Mission Set Development NPS-19-N108: Integration of MDUSV into a Carrier/Expeditionary Strike Group Primary deliverables include a student thesis or capstone report and a final report summarizing the results, findings, and recommendations from the entire study. |
