Back Auto-Launch Projectiles to Initiate Swarms of UAV's (APIS-U)

Robotics and unmanned systems are increasingly a critical element of current and future military operations, and their capabilities and associated technologies must continue to rapidly evolve to keep pace with increasingly expanding mission sets. As embedded computational intelligence and autonomous capabilities also advance, and with the confluence of low-cost and availability of unmanned systems, specifically in the aerial domain, innovative technologies leveraging these elements have emerged from theoretical research to fielded capabilities. One area rapidly approaching this transition includes the deployment and employment of swarm unmanned aerial systems (UASs), where large numbers of aerial robots can autonomously coordinate their actions to accomplish one or more designated objectives. Such a swarm capability can not only potentially expand the current mission sets enabled by unmanned technologies but may also usher in novel tactics development and future naval concepts of operations.
The development effort proposed herein seeks to advance the design, integration, and live-fly fielding of existing or near-term technologies developed at the Naval Postgraduate School that enable swarm UAS capabilities, specifically in the areas of swarm autonomy and swarm operations. This work is intended to directly inform the systems integration effort for the ONR APIS-U initiative for at-sea demonstration of swarm UAS technologies.
