Summary | The ability to detect and track submarines is critical to national security and a high CNO priority. To help improve the Navy's ability to use environmental information to optimize the deployment of undersea warfare (USW) assets, this work estimates the value of environmental forecasts in terms of mission outcomes when used in tactical decision-making in Theater USW. METOC forecasts, associated acoustic forecasts, and their implications for decisions and mission outcomes are combined to estimate forecast value, and to identify the key drivers of value and answer research questions regarding the value of alternative information sources. This can ultimately inform investment in observation and modeling, as well as tactical decisions regarding what information to prioritize when bandwidth and/or update cycles are limited. |
