Summary In this proposal, the characteristics structure of an ET event is placed in a framework of three regions defined as: i) the decaying tropical cyclone core, ii) the tropical cyclone-midlatitude interface, and iii) the midlatitude impact region. Specific objectives include:
i) Increase understanding of the dependence of the occurrence, amplitude, and extent of the downstream response to an ET event on the character of the interaction between the decaying tropical cyclone and the midlatitude circulation into which it is moving;
ii) Define the relative roles of the decaying tropical cyclone characteristics and the midlatitude flow characteristics in downstream development with and ET event;
iii) Assess the impact on predictability of downstream development due to improved representation of the structural characteristics associated with an ET event.
