Summary In this project we intend to develop the theoretical foundations for multiscale PS methods with applications to space problems. A design and application of PS technique suited for the different scales allows for an efficient discretization thereby making a real-time or even faster-than-real-time computation realizable. A prototypical multiscale problem consists of a fast spinning momentum wheel, a slower gimbal motion followed by a slower spacecraft attitude motion. In orbital scale, the slow attitude motion is the fastest motion! The orbital motion itself can be described by a fast steering and a slower motion of the center-of-mass(c.m.). Thus, the full problem has at least five distinct time scales wherein the fastest one is that of the spinning wheel while the slowest one is the orbital motion. Such problems will form the basis for testing our new ideas. The research will be carried out jointly between the Naval Postgraduate School and the University of California, Santa Cruz.
