Back Study of Composite Structures Traveling in Water or Containing Water with Dynamic Impact

Summary This is the continuation of the previous projects. The present study is focused on moving composite structures in water in addition to stationary structures. Furthermore, potential operations of composite structures in the arctic seawater are considered. As a result, two major tasks are studied. The first task considers moving composite structures with either steady-state or accelerating motions in water. The drag forces are measured and computed as well as the dynamic responses of the composite structures are investigated. This task examines the effect of the bidirectional fluid-structure interaction on the drag force. Then, the similar motions of composite structures are again studied in water with floating ices. As arctic ices are melting and floating in seawater, navigating ships will hit the ice blocks. Different ship bow angles are also investigated to determine how the bow angle influences the operation in the arctic seawater. Therefore, this study investigates the effectiveness of composite ship hulls traveling through the arctic water. The next task examines a composite container including fluid inside. Then, an impact force is applied to the composite container. One example of this case is a composite fuel tank. A series of parametric studies will be conducted for this task so as to understand the effect of the fluid-structure interaction on dynamic responses of the composite storage tanks.
