Back Synthesis and Characterization of Sulfide Particulates for Transparent Ceramic Applications

Summary Zinc sulfide (ZnS) and calcium lanthanum sulfide (CaLa2S4) are material systems of interest for transparent dome applications due to their optical transparency. ZnS is the state-of-the-art used currently for optically transparent window and dome materials. CaLa2S4 is an emerging material with a much wider wavelength transmission window. The objective of this study is to synthesize ZnS and CaLa2S4 particles using plasma and furnace processing routes. The sulfide particulates are intended to be used by US Army Research Laboratory (US ARL) for transparent ceramic manufacturing and as such, this study will aim to produce sulfide particulates that: 1) have low residual oxygen content, 2) are nanometric, and 3) are spherical.
