Summary This proposal is to specifically address the problem of fan and compressor operability under the severe conditions that Navy gas turbine engines operate with inlet distortion due to high angle of attack flight and/or steam or hot gas ingestion. The current trend toward increased pressure rise per stage and increased blade aerodynamic loading tends to reduce the stable operating range of fans/compressors. To provide adequate stall margin, the fan/compressor operate at conditions that are not at their optimum efficiency. Casing treatments are means through which the stable operating range of the compressor may be extended however at times these can be at the expense of fan/compressor performance and efficiency.
Deliverables; Student theses and year-end reports for year one, two and three, that will include details of the aeromechanical design of the optimized rotor and matched casing treatment.
