Summary The objective of the proposed study is to analyze the F-35 JSF MADL datalink architecture to determine what data could benefit the Surface Fleet and how that data can be safely and securely passed to ship spaces / systems at its given classification level. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) utilizes the Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL), however, the Surface Fleet is not currently configured to utilize this network. We will analyze this network from the perspective of a Surface Warrior to determine what data is contained that could benefit the Surface Fleet. Goals include determining what classification each data set is held at, and how that data could be safely and securely channeled to an appropriate space or system (i.e. SSES, CIC, Aegis, SSDS, etc.) that can utilize that data at its given classification level. Examples of JSF and Aegis Integrated Fire Control have been demonstrated through industry experimentation of their proposed equipment or materiel solutions. We will review previously proposed solutions, identify potential future data flows from MADL to AEGIS and SSDS, and evaluate their utility for Navy surface warfare applications.

1. How can surface ships (Aegis and SSDS) receive and utilize MADL data while safely and securely meeting classification guidelines?
2. Investigate industry’s proposed MADL-to-Ship cross-domain solutions, including ease of install, ease of use, availability of equipment, and cost.
3. Conduct a cost-benefit analysis of MADL and Aegis integration as well as MADL and SSDS integration.

Deliverables include: Summary report summarizing findings and recommendations regarding integration of F-35 MADL with Naval Surface Warfare forces and systems; completed theses; final briefing to the sponsor; project poster and quad chart.
