Summary |
Background: Under the direction of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), the Navy flag officer development program develops and sponsors professional, executive level development programs for flag officers and Senior executive service (SES) members of the Department of the Navy (DON). The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) provides support with delivery of some courses and additionally in facilitating contractual relationships with prominent universities with unique curriculum tailored for the Navy leadership. Scope: The foundation for all Navy senior leadership education programs is to transform flag officers and senior DON civilians into corporate citizens in the global environment. The Navy Executive Development Program (NEDP) focuses on courses that are relevant and current, reflecting the latest academic research and lessons learned from industry. Refinement in the areas of risk management and assessment, innovation and creativity, decision-making and total ownership cost/financial literacy are essential for creating corporate citizens at their executive level of responsibility. Objectives: The desired outcome of the Strategic Thinking (ST) curriculum is a cadre of flag officers and members of the SES community who demonstrate the ability to think strategically, execute the DON/CNO strategy, lead change, and produce more effective and efficient business operations. Specifically they will: - Be motivated to improve efficiency in how their organization/command does business - Understand their role in the global environment - Understand how to assess and take prudent risks, and how to manage risk - Possess the capability to formulate strategies for human capital and information resources supporting the Navy Maritime Strategy - Possess the capability to critically assess their organization’s mission, to formulate and effective strategy in a changing environment, and implement a plan to execute the strategy - Be able to identify and examine external and internal changes and how they may affect the current strategy - Understand the “big picture” and how their role affects external stakeholders - Exhibit corporate citizenship with empowering tools/insights and collaborative skills |
