Summary |
The proposed study will pick up from work underway now at the NPS under funding from DARPA, the creator SEA HUNTER which is currently undergoing test and evaluation under the direction of ONR and SPAWAR in San Diego. Using the data gathered from the ACTUV Missions Workshop, we will conduct an assessment of current and future force structures comprised of manned and unmanned air, surface and subsurface systems and their ability in concert to control chokepoints in strategic locations. The team, using simulations such as OSM and EXTEND, will vary force structure mixes to test outcomes, develop scenarios and create data allowing assessment of the various options. Analysis of results will contribute to force structure decisions. More importantly, the research will contribute to developing key performance parameters for acquisition decisions as well as to indicate critical paths that require additional research and develop necessary for future acquisition decisions as well as to indicate critical paths that require additional research and develop necessary for future acquisition decisions. Implementation of more capable sonar systems is one example of a critical path. Additionally, the analysis should reveal the tactical behaviors necessary for unmanned systems, such as SEA HUNTER, to seamlessly join the fleet as a fully capable resource in the needed tactical engagement. Understanding these behaviors and how to implement them is one of the critical paths identified by research activities funded in FY16 and FY17. This program would continue that line of research. Questions regarding legal and ethical guidance of using unmanned systems are a current topic of study at the NPS and our intent is to coordinate our tactics development process with their work. |
