Back Friction Stir Welding of Ferritic ODS and HT9 Steels
Fiscal Year | 2012 |
Division | Graduate School of Engineering & Applied Science |
Department | Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering |
Investigator(s) | Brewer, Luke N. |
Sponsor | Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Admin (Other-Fed) |
Summary | NPS will perform friction stir weld (FSW) processing, characterization, mechanical testing and corrosion testing required for qualifying a FSW process for joining then-walled tubes of MA956 and related oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys. This program will be a collaboration between Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and NPS to develop steel joining technology for supporting the Laser Inertial Fusion Energy (LIFE) program. NPS will also collaborate with an industrial partner from leveraged ONR programs for the FSW process development. NPS will perform through microstructure and mechanical properties. NPS will measure the mechanical bahaviour of the welds, testing for properties critical to the LIFE program. |
