Summary |
Co-Active Design is an emerging systems engineering approach designed to better account for the interdependence between man and machines along the dimensions of observability, directability, and predictability (OPD). That is, teaming starts between man and machine through OPD. Currently, unmanned vehicles are operated remotely by an operator, or more than one operator. Further, often an additional sensor operator must operate the sensors separately from the main operator. Scientist and engineers are working hard to increase the automation of many of these tasks, which can be tedious. Research by several parties indicates that the next step is to explore man machine teaming by exploring the interdependence between man and machine. Clearly, in a perfect world we want the machine to do what it can do best, and the human to do what it can do best. While just three simple ingredients, achieving OPD can be quite challenging. Co-Active Design is a proven systems engineering process to help engineers and designers understand exactly what the requirements are to achieve interdependence between man and machine, thus identifying what functions can be automated, and which functions need human input or control. It is crucial for all the Navy's unmanned systems to consider teaming, since huge payoffs in mission effectiveness, manpower savings, and even costs may be realized. Research Objectives/Questions: What is Co-Active Design and how can it assist manned unmanned teaming? What is interdependence analysis and why is it so important for manned unmanned teaming? Why are observability, predictability, and directability so important to manned unmanned teaming? |
