Summary	The U.S. Navy is in the process of increasing female presence in previously restricted career paths. Retention of talented and qualified individuals is of utmost importance to maintaining a mission ready U.S. Navy and requires an understanding of factors that influence high performing female Sailors to stay in the service. This study will explore Sailors' understandings, definitions and desires regarding life-work balance. In short, this study will explore, "How do Sailors define life-work balance in the context of their Naval careers?" This study will conduct a detailed review of the academic literature and collect qualitative and quantitative data from individual and/or focus group interviews and surveys to develop a deeper understanding of the meaning of life-work balance from the perspective of Sailors, develop a life-work balance construct unique to the demands of the Navy to support future research, and make recommendations for policies and/or practices to support life-work balance in the context of a Naval career.
