Summary | As the U.S. Navy shifts to planning for distributed maritime operations, it must ensure its logistics capabilities are able to support these operations. The supply process will need to support several surface action groups and U.S. Marine Corps ground forces, all of which may be located very far from each other. Furthermore, supply ships such as those in the Combat Logistics Force (CLF) may have to remain a great distance from the contested areas. These factors will stress current logistics practices and will require innovative ideas to maintain proper supply levels of fighting forces. This project will investigate the integration of Bulk Fuel Caches (BFCs) into the USNâ¿¿s fuel distribution network, as a means of supporting distributed forces over large threat areas. Factors that will be considered include where a fixed inventory of BFCs should be prepositioned, how fuel capacity should be distributed, how BFCs can support the USMCâ¿¿s current CONOPS. Time permitting, we will also investigate whether the distribution of batteries is a viable alternative to BFCs as a source for energy. |
