Summary | The 2015 Expeditionary Force 21 Operational Reach Wargame identified organizational adaptation as a key area of improvement, to rebalance the logistics force to better enable operational reach. This proposal describes a two phase research study to investigate the feasibility of adding autonomous fuel tankers to logistics operations as an avenue for improving organizational adaptation. The objective of phase one is to identify a specific Concept of Operations (CONOPS), then develop a conceptual work system model with an autonomous fuel tanker for that CONOPS using the ten step macroergonomic analysis and design methodology. This sociotechnical design methodology facilitates the identification of (1) technical, organizational, personnel and environmental subsystems and processes that can influence overall system performance, (2) key process variances that can impact system throughput, energy consumption, and operational availability, (3) human-automation function allocation requirements, and (4) potential risks to human performance, specifically with respect to safety, speed, accuracy, situation awareness and automation trust. The second phase of this research study is to create and run a discrete event simulation model of the conceptual work system, in order to quantitatively evaluate system throughput, energy consumption, and operational availability. |
