Summary | The 2018 National Defense Strategy suggests that modernization as well as resilient and agile logistics will be critical to the future effectiveness of the armed services. Use of new battery technologies has the potential to support existing and emerging weapon and support systems, increasing reliability and lethality while reducing logistics and manpower requirements. We will examine the key trends in the manufacturing and use of commercial batteries and evaluate how DON can best leverage these trends. In addition, we will review DON and DoD policies and practices related to the procurement, testing, storage, use, and disposal of batteries. We will also assess what is being done between the DON and DoD to benefit from the evolution of commercial batteries, and what challenges may be faced. |
