Summary |
Applying the technique successfully utilized in the RAVEN design enhancement, to extend the PUMA UAV endurance with improved capabilities that would be beneficial to a wide range of Navy, Marines and special Operation missions. This will be accomplished by researching and selecting the most appropriate unmanned air vehicles that are currently utilized by the US Navy, Marine Corps and Special forces in order to meet all the requirements of this goal. Research tasks will include investigating current state-of-the-art commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) flexible and rigid solar cells, MPPT and power converters that combine ruggedness, high efficiency and weight conservation, and can be re-engineered and optimized for use in Navy/Marine UAV applications, with special emphasis on the PUMA, RAVEN and the WASP UAVs. The research work will also include the construction and testing of a solar powered PUMA UAV, as an initial technology demonstration, that would be capable of an extended long flights endurance for an all day missions. |
