Summary | The proposed research, to be conducted as part of Phase II of the ONR Inlets and River Mouths DRI (RIVET II), is focused on the interaction of ocean swell with strong currents in inlets and river mouths. A large number (40-60) of drifting buoys, equipped with accelerometer and GPS sensor packages will be deployed in the mouth of the Columbia River. The buoys accurately measure both the surface current and the wave orbital motion at the sea surface, providing a detailed data set for investigating the wave-current interaction dynamics. Additional measurements include ship-board ADCP and CTD surveys and bottom pressure and velocity profile measurements obtained with an array of fixed bottom-mounted instruments. The field work will be conducted on the UNOLS R/V Point Sur in collaboration with teams from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, UW-APL, and U-Miami. |
