Summary | In 1976 a new kind of laser was created using a beam of relativistic electrons and a periodic magnetic field to create the radiation. Over the years Free Electron Laser (FEL) technology has matured and sources are constantly being developed with wavelengths across the electromagnetic spectrum. Solid state lasers developed for missile defense operate in the 1-2 micron range to minimize attenuation through the atmosphere, and they are fixed to a specific wavelength based on hardware. A single FEL can explore propagation characteristics from the 1 to 5 micron range because of its "tunability." This gives FELs more flexibility and the ability to exploit multiple "optical windows" in the atmosphere. |
