Back Development of MEMS miniature acoustic sensors for gunshot and aerial drone identification and 3D localization

Summary | The motivation for this research is for identification of sound sources with sensors much smaller than the wavelength they detect and without the need of complex array arrangements, making MEMS bio-inspired detectors very attractive. We propose to study the acoustic signatures of firearms and small flying UAV'S using narrow-band Ormia-based acoustic sensors. We will develop the tools needed to record, process and analyze the specific spectral and temporal features of each source that allows for classification/identification. In addition, specific sensors will be designed to perform detection and classification/identification of the acoustic sources in this study. The ability and accuracy of 3D direction finding will be studied and systems comprised with multiple collocated MEMS sensors will be assembled to perform this task. Finally, the ability of distributed detectors comprised with multiple collocated MEMS sensors to pinpoint firearms and aerial drones will be studied and experimentally tested. This project directly supports current needs of Marine Corps for detecting, localizing and identification of soundscape could allow immediate countermeasures towards threats. These capabilities, obtained by miniature sensors with minimal impact on the internal signal processing the computational resources and power budget would allow integration in wearable personal devices or small drone installation that could signify a tremendous source of operational asymmetry for the Marine Corps. |
