Summary | 5G New Radio (NR) is an emerging technology for high data rate mobile access. It was defined by the European Third Generation Partnership Program (3GPP) as a follow-on to the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard for fourth generation mobile devices. Due to convergence of mobile standards, the adoption of 5G NR is inevitable for future mobile phone adoption. Many global telecommunications providers are actively promoting 5G NR. The proposal represents efforts with the strategic objective of Cooperative Collection under the technical domain of Discovery Research to develop signal analysis and precision geolocation techniques for 5G NR signals. Geolocation will be based on control messages used by NR basestations and subscribers. This will be done through analysis of traditional geolocation techniques and modification of the computational constraints to incorporate the NR control information. This approach leverages prior knowledge of mobile phone geolocation with new knowledge of the NR signal. Validation will be conducted through simulation of NR intercept under a variety of conditions. Benefits of this proposal will be a feasibility analysis of the types of 5G NR basestations (gNodeB) suitable for collection and geolocation outcomes of targeted mobile devices within 7 meters. |
