Summary |
A Memorandum-of-Agreement (MOA) was signed by NRO, AFRL, ONR, and NPS in May 2011 to establish an Adaptive Optics Center of Excellence (AOCoE) for National Security at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). The purpose of the AOCoE is to (i) conduct research in adaptive optics and related technologies focused on national security applications; (ii) establish and operate the Segmented Mirror Telescope and High Energy Laser Beam Control Testbed as a national users facility available to agencies or institutions; (iii) deepen the technical expertise and increase the throughput of NPS military students in adaptive optics; (iv) serve as a portal by which new developments in the academic adaptive optics community can be migrated to national security missions; and (v) attract top civilian students to careers in the Department of Defense and the Intelligence community. Under the AOCoE, this project will focus on basic research in (a) adaptive optics compensation methods for maritime deep turbulence; (b) atmospheric turbulence characterization, modeling, and simulation; and (c) test and evaluation of advanced beam control techniques and advanced adaptive optics configuration using low power laser beam control testbeds. |
