Summary POWER SYSTEMS MODELING FOR THE ONR SSL-TM PROGRAM. The Directed Energy Group at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) and the University of Texas at Austin's Center for Electromechanics (UT-CEM) will collaborate to construct new low fidelity power flow and higher fidelity transient models of electrical power systems on specified naval platforms. These new models will include modules for solid-state laser (SSL) weapon systems at several output levels, and modules for various energy storage technologies. The new models will leverage past experience of NPS and UT-CEM in developing power system models of electric ships with laser weapons. The lower fidelity models are the appropriate approach for studying effects with longer time scales: recharge times for various energy storage schemes, power sharing and heat output of various components, total laser output times for different duty cycles, etc. The higher fidelity models, which take many hours or even days of CPU time for a single simulation, are capable of exploring potentially harmful fast transients that a pulsed directed energy load could induce on the power grid. This work will provide guidance on how to mitigate these harmful effects. Both higher and lower fidelity power systems models are necessary for a complete analysis. The analysis is the basis for recommendations of feasible alternatives. Both NPS and UT-CEM have essential tasks in this effort.
