Summary The US Navy is currently conducting the Future Vertical Lift Maritime Strike (FVL-MS) Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) to identify the Family of Systems (FoS) that will replace the MH-60 Seahawk and MQ-8 Fire Scout. The FoS will consist of multiple aerial platforms (AP) that will perform multiple mission types, notably Surface Warfare (SUW), Antisubmarine Warfare (ASW), Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) which will require a diverse set of mission payloads (sensors, weapons, etc.). There are two types of payloads: fixed and modular. A fixed payload is hard-wired into the AP. A modular payload space on the AP supports a "plug-and-play" modularity, so that equipment can be swapped from one mission to another. An AP may be tasked with multiple missions, and thus needs the flexibility to be reconfigured for a new mission. The right mix of payloads must satisfy size, weight, power and cooling (SWAP-C) constraints. This research will provide insight into the payload configuration options for the replacements for the MH-60 and MQ-8.
