Summary |
The proposed research will explore solutions to integrate: UUVs, divers, commercial and cube satellites, self-forming mesh networks, and sensors in order to achieve high level maritime domain awareness. We’ll focus specifically on such challenges as mesh networking of commercial satellites with emerging Cubesats, UUVs, divers, and distributed sensors. We will analyze feasibility and constraints on the application of such orbital-subsurface mesh networking architectures in order to detect foreign objects and parasitic devices on vessels, prior to entering a seaport. We’ll also explore prospective solutions from the standpoint of technology integration gaps, and incentive structures needed for emerging space, and manned-unmanned underwater network providers. In order to accomplish these research objectives, we will form an interdisciplinary study team with Dr. Alex Bordetsky, Professor of Information Sciences and Space Systems as Principal Investigator for the project. Dr. Bordetsky’s CENETIX team (Center for Network Innovation and Experimentation) will focus on maritime field experiments and TTXs addressing technology integration solutions. Dr. Moltz, Professor of NSA and Space Systems, will help to explore prospective solutions for industry incentives to support maritime detection and address policy gaps for deploying commercial solutions. The research is envisioned to be contacted on the phase-by-phase basis, starting in FY18 as a first phase, and continuing through FY19 as the next phase The current proposal is focused on the first phase tasks and deliverables. |
