Summary Based on significant findings during FY2012 on the use of QR Code messaging as a form of Digital Semaphore, we propose integrating the novel approaches developed under previous CRUSER work for tactical use of QR Code messaging by unmanned systems and ships at sea. QR Code messaging can be thought of as a form of Digital Semaphore. Multiple interdependent essential techniques include image acquisition and processing using emerging ultra-high resolution, high-frame rate, and live-streaming 4K digital video camera systems. Field experimentation (FX) will include manned surrogate and unmanned systems in a variety of operational environments. Through a carefully designed and deliberately executed testing program, we plan to extend known image acquisition ranges and the ability to exploit them under a variety of environmental conditions. We are optimistic that such testing can significantly improve image capture ranges, pixel quality, digital signal analysis, and QR code processing. Creation of an open-source codebase will enable further future work aimed towards tactical deployment.
