Summary | Mobile broadband adoption is occurring on a global scale faster than adoption of any other technology in history, including the adoption of mobile phone. 5G New Radio (NR) is an emerging standard for the next generation of mobile phones. The current 4G standard, LTE, currently is available to over 3 billion people worldwide. Nationwide LTE networks are already deployed and in use in countries like Pakistan, Iran, and Columbia. Many global telecommunications providers are actively promoting 5G NR. The proposal represents efforts with the strategic objective of Cooperative Collection under the technical domain of Discovery Research to develop novel methods for precision geolocation techniques of 5G mobile devices in multitower scenarios and consider the suitability for cubesat implementation. These novel techniques do not require signal measurements but are based on control messages used by 5G basestations and subscribers. This approach leverages prior knowledge of mobile phone geolocation techniques with new knowledge of the 5G signals. Validation will be conducted through actual field testing at Yuma Proving Ground and on public networks as appropriate. LCDR Bryan Martin could potentially be assigned to the sponsor following completion of his degree work. |
