Summary The ONR's Total Platform Cyber Protection (TPCP) program currently supports a portfolio of projects to explore the power and limitations of protocol feature subsetting and dialecting. In contrast to the "one size fits all" operation paradigm of open source protocol implementations, the developed protocol customization techniques aim to specialize and obfuscate protocol behaviors of a target network at the binary-code level in order to increase the effort level of potential cyber-attacks against the network while making such attacks more visible to network monitoring systems. This project complements these efforts by investigating the usability issues that will likely arise with protocol customization, particularly the important question of how to verify that certain network-wide security properties such as the reachability matrix will remain intact.
