Summary | The next generation of cognitive radios (4G-CR) will pose a challenge to passive signal localization and tracking systems. Most likely the 4G-CR systems will use adaptive FH-OFDM-based waveforms to maximize the utilization of white spaces (temporarily unused) and the black spaces in the EM spectrum with low probability of interference (LPI) to existing strong primary signals. These waveforms will be integrated to the spectrum sensing data to adapt on-the-fly while considering available resources. Furthermore, two other main goals of 4G-CR are to achieve low probability of detection (LPD) and to be able to underlay and/or overlay a strong primary signal in a licensed spectrum. These goals drastically reduce the effectiveness of existing signal localization and tracking methods. Our goal is to study the strength and weakness of 4G-CR to identify parameters in the adaptive FH-OFDM-based waveform and to devise methods to effectively localize and tracking the 4G-CR signal. |
