Summary Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP), Weapon Systems Support (WSS), has been utilizing optimization models in support of inventory level setting for many decades. Understanding the internal mechanics of these models is important for NAVSUP WSS planners for many reasons, from actively participating in their specifications and development to providing transparent inventory policies. Since 2015, NAVSUP and the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) have engaged in collaborative development of mathematical optimization models, algorithms and computational tools for all echelons of the U.S. Navy supply system. NAVSUP WSS is interested in growing a next generation of experts capable of understanding all of the NPS-developed tools beyond the user's standpoint. One area of learning from which NAVSUP planners would greatly benefit is optimization. To that end, the main goal of this professional development proposal is to impart an "Introduction to Optimization" course that improves NAVSUP's base knowledge on this instrumental subject.
