Summary The Navy is investigating the use of different initiators for use in its seabed effectors. Both underwater explosions and implosion are effective at generating the necessary kinetic energy effects required to disable or destroy undesirable seabed targets. Each of these basic options contains positive and negative attributes with regard to size, weight, volume and relative yield. An investigation to better understand the full potential of both of these seabed effector types is required as the resulting effects that these energy creating methods produce is highly dependent on the surrounding environment. Water depth with its varying hydrostatic pressure, the form factor, material properties and other target characteristics as well as the seabottom density, shape and proximity all have the ability to influence the overall result of the seabed effector. This research will provide a comprehensive mapping of the design space and resulting initiator affects based on depth, range, size and other factors through a parametric study.

Research Questions:
- Is there a family of seabed effector solutions that is practical for a wide range of depth and targets?
- How does the efficacy (kinetic energy output) compare for different seabed effectors (explosive/implosion) as a function of depth, size/volume, weight, and other engineering factors.
- What is the damage potential of each seabed effector and how do slant range, propagation decay, secondary bubble affects and similar characteristics of each vary the resulting impact and response of the target.
- How is the design of the delivery vehicle affected by having to account for mitigation of potential damage in all of the various types of seabed effector investigated.

Deliverables include: 1) Quarterly IPRs; 2) Mid-year update; 3) Executive Summary; 4) Technical Report.
