Back Increasing Accuracy and Realism of Simulated Naval Tactics with Monterey Phoenix Behavior Models

Summary Live training environments used to develop Marine combat skills deliver real physical conditions and evoke realistic physical and mental stresses of anticipated operational environments. While highly effective training environments, they require substantial planning, scheduling, and coordination; are subject to emergent issues that reduce the total time that Marines spend in active in training; and are generally costly. Simulated environments have increasingly been used as a complement to live environments to provide a cost-effective option with on-demand availability for the rehearsal of certain physical and cognitive tasks. This research explores the extent to which simulated training environments can be used to support Marine combat training. The research project seeks to answer the following question: In what ways do Monterey Phoenix behavior models support more accurate training experiences for Marines for less cost than live action training events? Monterey Phoenix is a behavior modeling language, approach and tool developed by the Navy to provide the most complete coverage of scenario variants available from a modeling environment, including not just normal flows of events (normal situations) but also numerous off-nominal and failure mode scenarios. It is expected that Monterey Phoenix will provide the Marine Corps a new and unique canvas for exploring and learning from examples of both desired and undesired execution of standard procedures and decision making. They may also be evaluated in training sessions to reason through the consequences of making one decision or another before practicing in a live environment.
