Summary | The goal of this project is to study the spatial dependence and pdf of the scattering from rock outcrops - an exemplar type of very rough, nonstationary surface that exhibits non-Rayleigh scattering. Since the spatial variability of roughness has been demonstrated to be a cause of this, we propose to focus on rocky seafloors in Monterey Bay. Our goal is a theoretical model of scattering strength for these types of surfaces, and a model for the pdf. Since the pdf of the scattered field has been demonstrated to change as a function of acoustic resolution, even for homogeneous rough seafloors, this model must be able to handle cases in which the scattered field samples come from one or the other of the two components of the rough surface, or when the field is a sum of both. To confirm the modeling portion of this work, we must demonstrate the model for a specific environment, with acoustic measurements collected alongside roughness measurements. |
