Summary | A recent study by Holt-Lunstad et al. shows social support is a factor that minimizes the effects of stress. Not only does social support help people feel less stressed, but it can also improve their health and decrease their mortality risk. According to Ko et al., there are four types of social supports to reduce the effects on stress: emotional social support, informational social support, tangible social support, and belonging social support. Bowen et al. examined the effects of emotional, tangible, and informational support among married couples. In addition, Holt-Lunstad et al. analyzed 148 smaller studies and showed a definitive finding that social support is heavily linked with health and wellbeing. In this proposal, we focus on belonging social support and how it affects stress among Sailors using the social network analysis. |
